John J Russell - Generation 3

John J3 Russell (Joseph2, John1) was born Apr 1814 in Washington County, Virginia. He died before 1852, probably in Cole County, Missouri. He married 31 Oct 1838 in Cole County, Missouri, Mary Henley who was born about 1821 in Tennessee. She died Dec 1875 in Bedford, Tarrant, Texas and is buried in Bedford Cemetery as Mary Barr, the name of her second husband, William Barr. She is the daughter of John Henley and Elizabeth J (Hoskins) Henley.

Early Years

John J Russell was born about 1814 in Washington County, Virginia.1 His parents were:2

John J is Joseph's son, based an executor's statement found in Joseph's probate file, written by the executor, Henry C Russell, John J's brother, which lists the names of Joseph's heirs.3 You can see this statement on Joseph's webpage. The list does not name John J because he died before his father died, but it does include the names of John J's children as heirs.

John J was born and spent his early childhood in Washington and Scott Counties, Virginia. Scott County was formed from part of Washington County in 1815. The family did not move; their part of the county was just renamed. John J was the second of eleven children, with one older sister. The family moved to Boone County, Missouri in 1821, when John was about 7 years old.4

Marriage and Children

John J married Mary "Polly" Henley on 31 Oct 1838 in Cole County, Missouri.5 Polly's parents, John Legate Henley and Elizabeth Hoskins, lived near John's father, Joseph Russell, in Cole County. John Henley is on the same census page as Joseph in the 1840 census.6 Polly was born about 1820 in Tennessee.7 John Henley and his family moved to Cole County, Missouri between 1833, when his daughter Eliza was born in Tennessee, and 1837, when his son Jasper Newton was born in Missouri.8

John and Polly had 4 children:

  1. William Jaspar, born 2 Dec 1839 in Cole Co, Missouri. ( Family Group Sheet (pdf) )
    1. married Martha Elzada Howard on 27 Oct 1858 in Cole, Co., Missouri.9
  2. Isabella B, born 17 Mar 1842 in Cole, Missouri. ( Family Group Sheet (pdf) )
    1. married Frances Marion Parker on 10 Feb 1860 in Cole, Co., Missouri.10
  3. Elizabeth Jane, born about 1844 in Cole, Missouri. ( Family Group Sheet (pdf) )
    1. married John Lovell on 23 Mar 1862 in Cole, Co., Missouri.11
    2. married Silas Lovell on Nov 1896 in Cole, Co., Missouri.12
  4. Lucy Ann, born Mar 1846 in Cole, Missouri. ( Family Group Sheet (pdf) )
    1. married William Howard on 23 Aug 1863 in Cole, Co., Missouri.13

The names of John's children were obtained from the probate file for Joseph, John's father.

In Missouri

John J lived his entire life, except the first seven years, in Missouri. He lived in Boone and Cole counties. When the family moved from Virginia, they settled in Boone County. Then, Cole County was created from part of Boone County in 1820. Thus, he didn't move; instead, the name of the county where he resided changed.14

In 1840, John is found in the US Census in Clark, Cole County, Missouri.15 At that time, his household consisted of:

The male child is William Jasper. The census shows one person working in agriculture, which suggests that John is a farmer. His father, Joseph, and his brother, Abraham, are also found in Clark, Cole, within two pages of him in this census listing.

John J made full payment and received a grant for 40 acres of land in Cole County, Missouri on 30 Mar 1849.16 John Henley, Mary's father, received several grants for property in the same area on the same date.17

In 1850, John is found in the census, still in Cole County, Missouri.18 At this time, his household consists of:

Age Born Born in
Jno J 36 about 1814 Virginia
Mary 30 about 1820 Tennessee
William 10 about 1840 Missouri
Isabella 8 about 1842 Missouri
Elizabeth J 6 about 1844 Missouri
Lucy Ann 4 about 1846 Missouri

The census lists John as a farmer. He is a property owner, with property valued at $200.00. The families listed next to him on the census are John Henley, his wife's father, and James Henley and Green Henley, his wife's brothers. John Henley is listed with property valued at $1500.00 and James with property valued at $1000.00.

Death

John J was found in the 1850 census, which is dated Oct 1850. He was dead at the time of his father's death in Dec 1859.19 Therefore, he died after 1850, but before 1859. His wife, Mary, married William Barr in Dec 1852.20 While it's possible that John and Mary divorced, it seems much more likely that Mary was a widow when she remarried. Thus, John probably died in 1851 or early 1852. A search for John's probate file has not found one in any of the Missouri State probate file resources.21

John's widow, married to William Barr, is found in the 1860 and 1870 census in Missouri.22,23 She and William have five children. Mary died in Dec 1875 and is buried in Bedford Cemetery, Bedford, Tarrant County, Texas., along with two of her children by William Barr.24

John's grave has not been found.
