Clarence was born in Galena, Cherokee County, Kansas.10,11 When he was 2 years old, his mother desserted the family.12 He and his sister, Blanche, lived with his father's sister, Minnie (Russell) Ryan and her husband, Morris Doors Ryan, during this time.13 In 1901, when he was 6, his father remarried.14 He and his sister moved into the new household, with his father, his stepmother, Ettie, 1 stepbrother and 2 stepsisters,15 where he lived until he married.

Marriage and Children

Clarence married Ruth Ann Davis on 2 Apr 1916 in Galena, when he was 20 and she was 1816. Clarence's father signed the declaration as A. W. Russell, swearing that he knew them, swearing to their age, and swearing the following:

That they are not related to each other in the degree probited by law, to-wit: Parent and child, grandparent and grandchild of any degree, brother and sister of either the one-half or of the whole blood, uncle and neice, aunt and nephew, nor first cousins;...

Alex Russell, Clarence's father, and George Alfred Davis, Ruth's father, were neighbors in Galena.17 In the 1915 census, Alex is listed in dwelling 716 and George Davis, with his family, including Ruth, is listed in dwelling 720.

Clarence and Ruth had three children:

  1. Kenneth Monroe b 12 Jan 1917 in Lawrence, South Dakota.18
    1. married Jean Orrison 15 Dec 1945 in Washington D.C.
  2. Wilbur Dale b 05 Jan 1919 in Cardin, Ottawa, Oklahoma.19

Their son, Joseph, died when he was 7 years old.23 He was hit by a car. Information about his death was provided in a message from a family member, but the source of the message is unknown at this time. The following is an excerpt from the message:

Ruth and her sons were visiting her sister Bess. They called the children in to eat, but Joseph remained outside and crossed the street in front of a car. He was killed by a hit and run driver. Bess said, "He died in my arms."

Clarence and Ruth divorced between 1930 and 1935.24 Clarence married Geneva B (McCormick) Remillard on 14 May 1938 in Skamania County, Washington.25 Couples who lived in Portland, Oregon during that time often crossed the Columbia River to be married in Washington, where getting married was quicker and easier. Geneva was previously married to Paul Remillard. She had four children from her previous marriage.

Geneva and Clarence divorced within a few years because Clarence married Arlie Colleen Mulherin on 17 Aug 1943 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.26 Clarence and Arlie did not have any children, although Arlie had children from a previous marriage to Therm Arthur Ward.27

In Kansas, South Dakota, and Oklahoma

Cardin

Tar River (Later Cardin) Oklahoma in 1923 You can see some of the miner's shanties and rooming houses in Cardin, which at that time was known as Tar River. You can see the unsanitary conditions with trash piles everywhere and out houses behind the buildings. Note the complete absence of trees. These towns sprung up out of the prairie almost overnite. In the distance are the mills and mines of the Picher mining district. The boom town was about 9 years old.

He is found in the 1920 census in Park Place, Clackamas County, Oregon36 and in 1930 in Oregon City, Clackamas County, Oregon.37 Clarence joins him in Oregon some time between the birth of his son in Kansas in 1926 and the 1930 census which shows Clarence living in Portland, Multhomah County, Oregon.38
