Abraham Franklin Russell - Generation 3

Abraham Franklin3 Russell (Joseph2, John1) was born about 1815 in Washington County, Virginia. He died Jan 1859 in Miller County, Missouri. He married 6 Nov 1834 in Cole County, Missouri Jane Ann Marie Boice who was born Jan 1817 in Missouri and died Sep 1886 in Fall River, Wilson County, Kansas. She is the daughter of George Thompson Boice and Sarah (Downing) Boice.

Early Years

Abraham Franklin Russell (called Frank) was born about 1815 in Washington County, Virginia.1 His parents were:2

Frank is definitely Joseph's son, based on the evidence. An executor's statement found in Joseph's probate file, written by the executor, Henry C Russell, Frank's brother, lists the names of Joseph's children.7 You can see this statement on Joseph's webpage. The list includes "...the children and heirs of Abraham Russell deceased residents of Miller County in said State". "said State" is Missouri. This statement shows that Frank died before Joseph; that is, before Dec 1859.

Frank was born and spent his early childhood in Washington and/or Scott County, Virginia. Scott County was formed from part of Washington County in 1815, so their home may have been in Scott County when Frank was born. Frank was the third of eleven children, with one older brother and one older sister. The family moved to Boone County, Missouri in 1821, when Frank was about 6 years old.8

Marriage and Children

Frank married Jane Ann Marie Boice (or Boyce) on 9 Nov 1834 in Cole County, Missouri.9 Jane's father, George Thompson Boice, was a neighbor of Frank's father, Joseph Russell, in Cole County. George is on the same census page as Joseph in the 1840 census.10 Jane was born and raised in Missouri.11

Frank and Jane had twelve children.

In Missouri

Frank lived his entire life in Missouri. Frank lived in Boone, Cole, and Miller Counties. When the family moved from Virginia, they settled in Boone County.29 Then, Cole County was created from part of Boone County in 1820 and Miller County was created from part of Cole County in 1837.30 Thus, he didn't move; instead, the name of the county where he resided changed.

On 10 Jan 1840, a land grant was registered to Frank for 37 acres of land in Cole County, Missouri.31 Although the land patents in the land patent database show Frank on this land in 1840, a book chronicling the history of Cole County shows him on this land in 1837.32 Frank is shown on Section 34 in both the land patent and the book. His father, Joseph, had Section 35. The land was West of the Osage River. The following is an exerpt from the book:

Township 42, Range 12, was entered west of the Osage River, on Section 35, by Joseph RUSSELL, in 1832; on Section 34, by Louis BOLTON and Abram F. RUSSELL, in 1837;

The land patent does not mention Louis Bolton.

In 1840, Frank is found in the census in Clark, Cole County, Missouri.33 At this time, his household consists of:

The children in this household would be Benjamin, John,, and Martha. The extra male might be the Louis Bolton mentioned in the book excerpt. Or the extra male could be a hired hand or perhaps a sibling. The census listing shows that two people in the household are engaged in agriculture.

In 1850, Frank is found in the census in District 13, Miller County, Missouri, probably just a renaming of the county, not a move.34 At this time, his household consists of:

Age Born Born in
Abraham 35 about 1815 Virginia
Jane 33 about 1817 Missouri
Benjamin 15 about 1835 Missouri
John 13 about 1837 Missouri
Martha 11 about 1839 Missouri
James 9 about 1841 Missouri
George 7 about 1843 Missouri
Mary 5 about 1845 Missouri
William 3 about 1847 Missouri
Elizabeth 1 about 1849 Missouri

On 3 Nov 1857, a land patent wass registered to Frank for 120 acres in Miller County.35

Death

Frank died after Nov 1857 when he registered his land purchase. He died before Dec 1859 when his father died, as shown in his father's probate document.36 His grave has not been found.

Frank died intestate.37 On Feb 8, 1859, the court appointed Thomas Scott as the administrator of the estate. The estate had very little cash value. The widow was paid $100 out of the assets of the estate to subsist on while the estate was being settled. The court ordered the land to be sold at public auction to the highest bidder to pay the debts of the estate. After the property was sold and the bills and fees paid, the value of the estate was $18.00.

After Frank's death, his wife, Jane, and the children remaining at home are found living next to her sons James Joseph and Benjamin in Missouri.38 Later she moved to Kansas with their son, James Joseph and his wife and is found living next to them.39
